SSCAN Opposes the Kinder Morgan Pipeline – We are in good company…

Governor Inslee recently wrote a Seattle Times editorial in opposition to┬áthe Kinder Morgan Pipleline. We appreciate his outspoken criticism of this project that will triple the company’s current oil-carrying capacity from the Albertan tar sands. This project would add 348 tankers in the Salish Sea annually, and the Sightline Institute believes that this would increase the risk of spills in Washington State waters dramatically. Extracting fossil fuels from the tar sands is doing incredible damage already. So we are grateful to Governor Inslee for his strong opposition to this project and we are grateful to our South Seattle Representatives who are also speaking out.

We would specifically like to thank the Safe Energy Leader Alliance (SELA) which is coordinated through King County Executive Dow Constantine’s office. SELA drafted a letter to the British Columbia Premier in opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline project. It was signed by a number of elected officials in South Seattle. Thank you to all of the representatives in the 37th LD (Saldana, Santos, Pettigrew) and the 34th LD (Neslon, Fitzgibbon, Cody) who signed the letter. None of the legislators from the 11th LD (Hasegawa, Hudgins, Bergquist) have signed it. If you live in the 11th LD, this would be an excellent time to reach out to your representatives and encourage them to join the Safe Energy Leadership Alliance so that they can also take action to oppose dirty fossil fuel projects like the Kinder Morgan Pipeline.
