Green New Deal is gaining momentum

On February 9th, environmental and social justice organizations are joining forces to tell Congressmembers that their constituents demand a Green New Deal. Volunteers from SSCAN will be among them, visiting the offices of Representative Adam Smith.

According to newly elected Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “The Green New Deal we are proposing will be similar in scale to the mobilization efforts seen in World War II or the Marshall Plan. It will require the investment of trillions of dollars and the creation of millions of high-wage jobs. We must again invest in the development, manufacturing, deployment, and distribution of energy but this time green energy.”

The exact details of the Green New Deal are being worked out, but the broad thrust is a massive program of investments in clean-energy jobs and infrastructure, meant to transform not just the energy sector, but the entire economy. It is meant both to decarbonize the economy and to make it fairer and more just.
